We can do better
There are many changes that could be made to the Journalism study
program. Regarding the subjects that are studied, I think it would be
very good if I was given the possibility of delving into some
subjects such as economics, politics or culture, since the courses
are usually introductory. In addition, the degree is very oriented to
the academic investigation of communication theory, but I think that
this should be a possibility and not an obligation.
I also think it is a career that could last four years instead of five. Maybe leave the fifth year to do the thesis exclusively. The workload I think is appropriate, but it can be somewhat excessive at times, especially when doing long recording and video editing sessions.
Something that could be improved is the use of technological tools. Some of them are not used, such as programming for the development of software that can be used in investigative pieces. There are currently large journalistic investigations that make use of software and artificial intelligence to find stories that are of public interest.
The teaching methods are OK, but these last two years have changed radically, due to the pandemic. Online learning was the only alternative, which I think may have affected many students who did not have the means or the space to learn in this way. But even so, the effort of teachers and students allowed us to carry out the task.
